Indian Institute of Public Health received its founding support in 2008 from Honorable Shri Narendra Modi(then Chief Minister of Gujarat) to become the first Public Health University in India. The establishment of IIPHG began in 2007 through an MoU executed by Government of Gujarat and Public Health Foundation of India. Government of Gujarat joined the project financing agreement by committing to pay part of the project expenses and providing land under the MoU. IIPHG achieves its mission by conducting educational programs while training staff and performing research as well as policy advocacy to support India's national health system development. The first Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health Management program led institute to open its operations in July 2008 from its temporary base in Ahmedabad. The institution occupies 50 acres of green space where it maintains advanced research laboratories near Gandhinagar. The Indian Institute of Public Health Gandhinagar holds the title as India’s biggest public health university.
